Job Description

The AU Internship Program 2026 is a full-time opportunity for young Africans to gain hands-on professional experience in a multicultural, policy-driven environment.

Selected interns will:

  • Provide administrative and technical support to assigned departments
  • Contribute to policy implementation and research activities
  • Support departmental projects and reporting processes
  • Participate in meetings, documentation, and internal communications
  • Gain exposure to continental development initiatives

Internship Focus Areas:

Interns may be placed in departments including:

  1. Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy & Sustainable Environment (ARBE)
  2. Economic Development, Trade, Industry & Mining (ETIM)
  3. Education, Science, Technology & Innovation (ESTI)
  4. Political Affairs, Peace & Security (PAPS)
  5. Health, Humanitarian Affairs & Social Development (HHS)
  6. Human Resources Management (HRM)
  7. Information & Communication
  8. Women, Gender & Youth (WGY)
  9. Infrastructure & Energy (IE)
  10. NEPAD
  11. Management Information Systems (MIS)
  12. Conference Management & Publications
  13. Office of Legal Counsel
  14. Ethics, Integrity & Standards
  15. And other AU directorates

Qualifications & Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Have completed a Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Be a citizen of an African Union Member State
  • Be no older than 32 years at the time of selection
  • Be fluent in at least one AU working language (Arabic, English, French, or Portuguese)
  • Demonstrate high moral standards and integrity
  • Have no serious criminal record
  • Show interest in the mission and work of the AU
  • Prior work experience is not required

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good email and internet skills
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to work in multicultural environments
  • Knowledge of additional AU languages is an advantage

Internship Terms:

  • Type: Full-Time
  • Duration: 3 months (renewable once; maximum 6 months)
  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Interns cover travel, accommodation, and living expenses
  • Valid health insurance required
  • AU may assist with visa processes where necessary
