Job Description
Egbin Power Plc is seeking a Local Plant Operator to support the safe, reliable and efficient operation of its power generation plant in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The successful candidate will monitor assigned generating units through routine plant patrols and field inspections, operate field equipment, identify abnormalities and carry out operational instructions from the Control Room in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine inspections of boilers, turbines, condensers, feedwater systems, cooling systems and auxiliary equipment.
- Monitor equipment for leaks, unusual sounds, excessive vibration, abnormal temperatures and pressure variations.
- Identify and report equipment faults, operational irregularities and potential safety hazards.
- Operate manual field equipment, including valves, pumps and drain/vent systems.
- Monitor auxiliary systems such as fuel supply, cooling water and lubrication systems.
- Carry out field procedures for plant start-up and shutdown as directed by the Control Room.
- Follow established safety procedures, including hazard identification, risk assessment and emergency response protocols.
- Participate in safety drills, toolbox meetings and relevant compliance training.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards within assigned plant areas.
- Record equipment conditions, observations and interventions accurately in shift logbooks.
- Communicate plant conditions, deviations and field activities to Control Room personnel.
- Provide comprehensive shift handover information to incoming operators.
- Support maintenance teams by preparing equipment for servicing, including isolation and access arrangements.
- Provide real-time feedback on equipment performance and emerging faults.
- Assist technical teams during troubleshooting and field assessments.
- Execute emergency shutdown and start-up procedures in coordination with Control Room personnel.
- Respond appropriately to plant trips, equipment malfunctions and leaks.
- Participate in fire drills and emergency preparedness activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of an OND (Ordinary National Diploma) or Technical Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Plant Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- 0–2 years of relevant experience in a power generation plant, refinery or heavy industrial process plant.
- Previous experience with steam turbine operations or thermal power plants will be an added advantage.
- Basic understanding of power plant processes, including steam cycles, boiler operations and cooling systems.
- Ability to interpret pressure, temperature and flow gauges as well as P&ID diagrams.
- Familiarity with safety regulations, permit-to-work procedures and emergency shutdown processes.
- Basic troubleshooting knowledge of pumps, valves, piping systems and auxiliary equipment.
- Strong observation and attention-to-detail skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Reliability and discipline in carrying out operational responsibilities.
- Ability to remain effective under pressure and respond appropriately during emergencies.
- Willingness to learn, share knowledge and collaborate with team members.
- Strong critical-thinking skills and a methodical approach to operational tasks.
