The African Union (AU) is the continental organization comprising all 55 African Union Member States. Established in 2002 as the successor to the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the AU works to promote peace, security, sustainable development, regional integration, democratic governance, and economic prosperity across Africa.
Through its African Union Commission (AUC), the organization implements initiatives that strengthen governance, leadership, youth participation, and institutional development throughout the continent.
Job Description
The African Union Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), through the African Governance Architecture – African Peace and Security Architecture (AGA-APSA) Secretariat, is organizing the Continental Capacity Building Training Programme for Citizens on Democratic Governance, Elections, and Pan-African Leadership.
The programme aligns with Agenda 2063 (Aspiration 6), which emphasizes youth-driven development and inclusive governance. Participants will receive intensive training on democratic governance, leadership, civic engagement, electoral processes, advocacy, and African Union Shared Values, particularly the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG).
Programme Objectives
- Strengthen youth participation in democratic and electoral processes.
- Build leadership and advocacy skills among young Africans.
- Promote civic engagement and democratic governance.
- Increase awareness of African Union governance frameworks and policies.
- Equip participants to implement community-based leadership initiatives after the training.
Qualifications & Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of an African Union Member State.
- Be between 18 and 35 years of age.
- Demonstrate leadership experience in democratic governance, elections, youth participation, peace, or security.
- Be affiliated with youth-led organizations, civil society organizations, public institutions, or initiatives related to governance, democracy, leadership, human rights, or electoral processes.
- Commit to participating throughout the entire training programme.
- Be willing to replicate or cascade the knowledge gained within their communities or organizations after completing the programme.
